Berlin-Mitte represents the most central district of Berlin (Mitte is German for centre). The district “Mitte” encompasses Berlin's historic core. The area includes some of the most important tourist sites of Berlin (like the Pergamon Museum, Brandenburg Gate, Charité and the Reichstag, among others), most of which were former in East Berlin. In 2001, Berlin's districts were reorganized. The former district of Mitte, located entirely within the former East Berlin, was combined with the districts of Wedding and Tiergarten (both of which formerly belonged to West Berlin) to form the new “Mitte” district. The new district consists of an area of 39.47 km² and has, as of 2003, about 320,700 inhabitants.

Prices as well as rents have alread risen heavily due to the obviuous closeness to the Parliament and other main institutions of Germany, housing a more wealthy clientele than any other new district of Berlin. The district Berlin-Mitte is currently the most demanded housing location in Berlin with the highest price level.

The residents of “Mitte” love the big city life, but also their locality of their homes, and preferably like to live in the renovated old buildings of the “Spandauer” and “Rosenthaler Vorstadt” areas within Mitte. Here are also lovely green spots, in which the besieged city residents enjoy time to breathe. The close distances and the excellent connections to the Prenzlauer Berg, to Alexanderplatz, the Potsdamer Platz, Friedrichstrasse, the government district, and even to Kurfürstendamm make this district especially desirable, for anybody who likes to enjoy a central and urban lifestyle.
